Show moreMoths in the Backseat, 2013 Theo Coval + The warm, rich tang of cedar incense clung to every fiber of the old car’s seats. As the last cone bled silver smoke onto the ceiling, I did my best to choke on it. The thick scent tightened around my throat as the overhead light flickered, harassed by the fluttering wings of tiny white moths. It was the break of dawn, and I had not slept. My dreams were not nightmares, though they were strange, a jumbled sequence of faces and ideas that left me the moment I woke up in a fit of confusion. I spent the gray hours of the morning hunting on the edges of sleep’s wavering moors. The cold air made me cough, and my neck cramped from shivering under a milky white sky. Billboards outside told me where to shop, what to avoid, who had gone missing. They stirred some old feeling that was once loathing, gone sour and stale, driven to apathy by boredom. It built and built, each new wild snapping open of the eyes adding a thick layer of off- color scar tissue over the wound. What remained was different, elastic, numb. The injury no longer bled, but it did not go away. Regardless, the city went on. Together, we kept breathing In pursuit of the lights of the car, more moths fluttered at the window. I invited them in and let them crash against the ceiling light where it was warm and safe. I had an understanding with them. I let them in, but I never let them out. I still do not know where they went.

Show moreForeword ———+— The namesake for our magazine, Tho Win, is an important figure in Dakhota mythology. She is the entity responsible for delivering souls safely to earth and returning them to the spirit world at the time of their passing. Our hope is that, as you read this issue of the magazine, you are similarly transported to worlds beyond our own. To the authors, artists, photographers, and poets whose work is showcased in this volume, we thank you and applaud your talent, your bravery, and your honesty. It is not easy to put your soul on display in such a way, and without you, this magazine could not exist. We would like to extend a special thanks to those who have made this edition of the magazine possible: Lindsay Starck, our faculty mentor, Corey Hayden and Jack Jensen, our former co-lead editors, and Firi Dawid, the director of campus life. Finally, we thank you, our readers. Art without witness can only echo; it takes an audience to stir it to song. Your engagement is vital, and your interpretations sacred. Whether you are looking for a tether to this earth or for freedom from it, we hope you find the worlds you are looking for within the pages of this magazine. Sincerely, The Tho Win editorial board Addy Ney, Lead Editor Theo Coval, Managing Editor Aiji Endo, Assistant Lead Editor iil

Show more+ Augsburg University is built on stolen land. The Dakhota and the Anishinaabe people are the original inhabitants of this land, and they remain its rightful stewards to this day. In 2021, the editorial board changed our magazine’s name to Tho Win in order to acknowledge this fact, as well as to amplify marginalized voices in the publishing industry and to break from imperialist project-building in some way, however small. Art—in all its forms—has long been a vector of subversion and resistance pointing toward liberation, and we at Théo Win Magazine aim to ground ourselves in and face the future from that radical tradition. +

Show moreil + Minnesota, being home to the Dakota people for thousands of years, has many places of power. One of which is located at what is now Indian Mounds Park, which is home to earth mounds that reflect a star constellation honoring Tho Win. To the Dakhota people, the Blue Star Woman is the entity that sends you to earth. But she is also the first entity you meet when you die. The Dakhota have no heaven or hell, only life and then afterlife. This name honors our local places of power and ancient Dakhota Star knowledge. + —Reuben "Kitto" Stanley, on the significance of the magazine's name change in 2022
