There's research prior to going about the country your representing, and then a short one page paper on its views. At the conference there’s people from around the world there. Some people are really focused who never break character from their country. But others are more laid back and play their part, but also take advantage of meeting people from around the world. We were there for a week and the NMUN conference was for 4 days, then the rest of the time was free to explore the city. In addition, we were able to meet with an ambassador from the country we represented and use some of the rooms from the United Nations — this means actually sitting there, voting, etc." commie Higgins 62 Show less

Show more66 It all started with Brian Krohn's summer research question: is there a better way to make biodiesel? Brian's answer to that question has led him from the laboratory to Capitol Hill. With the help of Augsburg faculty and alumni. Brian uncovered a way to produce biodiesel from a wide variety of organic sources, not just crops. The new process also creates biodiesel much faster than existing methods while producing virtually no waste. "Our process can use any feedstock." said Brian. "What this does is it makes biodiesel cheaper. and you're not using a food source -- like corn or soybeans -- to make a fuel." With the concern that biofuels are driving up food prices. it is no surprise that Congress is showing interest in Brian's research. Last week in Washington DC. he and chemistry Professor Arlin Gyberg met with US. Sen. Amy Kolbuchar and the staffs of US. Reps. James Oberstar. Collin Peterson. and Keith Ellison. Brian and Gyberg also briefed both the House and Senate Agriculture Committees. The story of Brian's discovery started with his URGO summer research project into biodiesel. After Brian's initial research. his project adviser. Professor Gyberg. helped him verify his findings. Then. the two reached out to alumnus Dr. Clayton McNeff. vice president of Sartec corporation. Sartec was able to take Brian and Gyberg's research discovery and turn it into a full-fledged production system that they named the "Mcgyan Process" after the various scientists involved in the project. Sartec has already made over 50.000 gallons of fuel using the Mycgyan process. and they are building a facility that will be producing 3 million gallons per year by the end of 2008. Not only is Brian a part of a discovery that might change the biofuels industry. he has gotten a lot of attention from local. national. and even international press. What does he think of it all? "I just thought it would be a fun summer research project." he said just before his interview with ABC NeWs. Show less

Show moreRandall Krug Sarah Lovik J Matchett Aaron Wells Augsburg on Budget By David Mott Augsburg officials were pleased to report that we were within one half of one percent of perfect adherence to our 2007-2008 budget. Newly implemented software systems and strategies at the administrative level delivered a level of accuracy which far surpassed expectations for the year. President Pribbenow shared his views on the budgeting process in an interview with The Echo. "Budgets do at their best reflect the highest aspirations of the college. If you can make that connection between your mission and strategy, then I can say in this budget its possible for us to spend the money to bring our classrooms up to a new level of technology and furniture. Now that weve done that everybody sees the impact that the budget has." When the administration sets out to create the budget every year they have to reach out to roughly 60 different departments and programs. All of their needs have to be considered carefully, and weighed against the resources the college expects to receive in the coming year. President Pribbenow has implemented a new format for departmental budgeting. "This is the first year weve asked people to do their budgeting by monthwhen you do that, and Ive done it at a couple of other institutions, my sense is that it usually takes two to three years to get that accurate, because its really hard. People dont always have predictable patterns. So the fact that after seven months were within this slight variance really is a miracle from my perspective. Its good if we got it right the first time, it may have just worked out that way. In the context of a budget this big it could be either." Joshua Lang Noelle McComb Heidi Le Peggy Larkin Peter Miller Jamie McDonell Staff Department heads were given a template which contains their spending from the previous year as compared to their budget, and asked to estimate their needs for the coming year. Pribbenow was pleased with the results. but wants to focus on the bigger picture in his role as President. "I really am much more interested in 3 to 5 year trends and plans both looking back and going forward overall Augsburg is about a 75 to 80 million dollar a year operation." He also confesses that budget making is in his list of top five favorite things to do as Augsburgs President. Kevin Myren, Vice President of Finance and Administration, facilitates with various departments to help them try to come in on budget and help make room for unforeseen expenses. Myren, who came to Augsburg in April of 2007, has been working to implement new finance systems. "We're trying to figure out how to make a system thats predictive and valid as we move forward. One of the challenges weve had this past year is weve has a lot of turnover in the accounting and finance office." Myren was very pleased with the results from the system this past year. "I think its more predictivethe fact that revenues are within one tenth of a percent and expenses are within 4 tenths of a percent indicates that overall the system is probably pretty good." Both Myren and Pribbenow were quick to acknowledge that one successful year of budgeting is hardly a reason to start celebrating. They plan to work to continually improve their procedures, with the hope of setting aggressive growth goals for the college that are realistic. So far they have been right on target. 45 Show less

However, Kati also explained the club did not hold traditional meetings. We doan always meet on a regular basis, but rather when we find something interesting to discuss in the art world.i During the 2007—2008 school year, the Art Club collaborated with other Augsburg clubs on campus to get more involved with the community. In 2007, the Art Club students worked with the Coalition for Student Activism program (CSA) to make posters for their trip to Georgia. They also worked with the Campus Kitchen program on a garden project, and with the History Club to plan a future trip to Chicago, which will take place at the end of the semester. Show more’llie ’lblvtymurv Opera closed Augsburg's 2006—2007 theater season. This play premiered in 19.28 and began the Epic tradition of theatre. This tradition can also be referred to as theater of alienation or theater of politics. It does not focus on the reality of plays. Instead, it allows audiences to make judgments on them. This play was a collalmration between poet and playwright Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt \V'eill. Its purpose was to make audiences aware of Brecht’s immense opposition to how society exploited the working class in the l‘)2()s. The original production of this play was controversial, but eventually audiences accepted it. Director Darcey Eugen commented on the purpose of theatre and the reason why audiences are attracted to Brecht's plays, "Theatre should reveal inequalities and offer new visions for the future. Plays like Brecht's illustrate a hunger for meaning. We still crave significance in the artistic events we experience." Brecht and Wei” used a collage of material in composing the music for the production creating a calxu‘et-type style. Brecht contributed lyrics of Biblical quotations, popular language, and street slang. \V'eill's lyrics drew from German opperetta, popular dance forms, and American jazz. According to Music Director Sonja Thompson, "This radical mix of forms not only entertains, but challenges the audience to think about life and social norms differently.” Gen [(1 l ’nt/sekboz ska ya . ‘ -..i.....- V .
