More information April 3,2020 ) I@ Email a correction for this post Keeping Track of Auggies Auggie Wins Prestigious STEM Award submitted by shafer@augsburg.edu Laura Kundel, a junior biochemistry major, just received the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship. In addition to the monetary award of $7,500 Laura will now be deemed competitive for the top graduate programs in her field. There were 1,343 applicants from 451 institutions and 396 winners. Lara has been a Sundquist research scholar the past two summers, once with Dr. Tara Mader and once with Dr. Wentzel. Dr. Wentzel assisted Laura with the research proposal section of the Goldwater and Wentzel, Mader and Allen all wrote letters on Laura’s behalf. Laura is scheduled to conduct research again this summer with Dr. Wentzel. Laura is currently Vice President of Tri-Beta, an honors program student, member of the chemistry club and an organic chemistry tutor. Her sister, Holly Kundel, won a Goldwater 2 years ago and is currently in the first year of her NSF Graduate Research Fellowship at the University of MN. Kudos Laura! The LEAD Fellows program is a great opportunity for students to develop their own leadership and civic agency through gaining meaningful work experience in community-focused organizations. LEAD Fellows have the support of a cohort of peers and Sabo Center staff as they discover what it means to be engaged citizens and critical thinkers. Fellows commit to bi-weekly meetings with the cohort as well as 2 (2 day) retreats annually, and can work up to 20 hours a week at their LEAD placement during the academic year. Eligible students will be in their 1st or 2nd year with at least 2 years left in undergrad here at Augsburg, and interested in leadership development and social change work.
