Show moreHISTORICAL STATEMENT AUGSBURG SEMINARY, the divinity school of the Lutheran Free Church, was founded in 1869. It is the oldest Norwegian Lutheran school of its kind in America. From its foundation until 1890 it was the Theological Seminary of the Norwegian- Dunish Conference, and from 1890 until 1893 it served as the divinity school of the United Norwe- gian Lutheran Church of America. Since the latter date it has been connected with the Lutheran Free Church movement. For several years prior to 1869 the Scandinavian Augustana Synod had maintained a Theological Sem- inary at Paxton, Illinois. This institution served both the Swedish and the Norwegian churches of that Synod as a union seminary. The founding of Augsburg Seminary was the result of a mutual agreement to divide the Paxton school and to estab- lish a. separate institution to serve the Norwegian congregations, as it was quite evident that the in— terests of the Norwegian branch of the Augustana Synod would in that way be served to greater ad- vantage. Augsburg Seminary commenced its work in Sep- tember 1869 at Marshall, 9. small village in Dane County, Wisconsin, and was at first connected with “Marshall Academy.” In the fall of 1870 it was separated from that institution, and during the sum- mer of 1872 it was moved to Minneapolis. A pre—' paratory curriculum has been maintained from the beginning, consisting at first of a one-year course, but later developed and enlarged into complete Academic and College Divisions. The beginning was insignificant; the congrega- tions supporting the school were neither large nor Show less

Show more20 AUGSBURG SEMINARY struggles and the final success of its founders in their effort to establish a school that should meet the urgent need of faithful and earnest pastors in a free Lutheran Church. While the curriculum of the school has been broadened and perfected in the course of time, still there has been no disposition to deviate from its original purpose. Altho Augsburg Seminary is primarily a divinity school, established and maintained for the education of Christian ministers, teachers, and missionaries, its leaders have not been unaware of the circum- stance that not all the students in the institution in~ tend to become such. For this reason the courses in the College and Academy Divisions have been ar— ranged so as to meet the needs also of those students who seek a there education preparatory to other lines of professional work. Augsburg Seminary endeavors to awaken and nourish the spiritual life in all its students. For this reason it not only makes attendance in classes of religious instruction obligatory, but it also seeks to surround the young people entrusted to its care with a. truly Christian atmosphere. Each class in the College and in the Academy is given religious in- struction two hours a week, and besides this 3 vol- untary class for the study of missions has been main- tained for several years, led by One of the Faculty members. Every morning, except Sunday, all stu~ dents are required to attend chapel exercises, which are led by one of the professors. Frequently visit~ ing pastors and others are invited to speak to the students in chapel. Prayer-meetings are held several evenings a Week, either by the student body or by smaller groups of students. The graduates now number several hun- dred, Many of these have subsequently taken up the study of Theology. Among the other gradu- ates from the College are teachers, physicians, en- gineers, lawyers, and men in other callings of im- portance and trust. The John H. Blegen Memorial Lectureship on Foreign Missions was established by resolution of the Board of Trustees for Augsburg Seminary in memory of Professor John H. Blegen who died Sept. 2, 1928. For over thirty years Prof. Blegen served as professor in Augsburg College. During those years and the following twelve years after his retire- ment from active work as a professor until his death his interest for missions was continuous and active. He gave much of his time and his energy in this cause, serving on the Lutheran Board of Missions from its beginning in 1893 until his death. Like- wise did he serve on the American Committee of the 83an Mission for the Northern Churches from its beginning in» 1895 until his death. He was a mem- ber of the Board of the Zion Society for Israel from 1887 until 1919. It was found fitting to perpetuate the memory of his spirit and his work by the found- ing of this leotureship. Rev. M. A. Peder-son, missionary and lifelong friend of Prof. Blegen, was appointed to fill the lec- tureship. Rev. Pederson has served as a missionary among the Santals in India. from 1904 to 1928, at which time he retired from active service on the mission field, and became executive Secretary and Treasurer of the Santal Committee in America with headquarters in Minneapolis.
