Show more174- AUGSBURG EKKO I thought as I watched her: How much com— passion have. you for the poor and erring of your own time? How many pitying glances and kind words do you give those of your own generation? But such is perverted mankind. However few there are who make it a point to serve those with whom they associate. there are many who think it their duty to bestow favors upon the dead. But there is only one time to do good —— to help a fellow—being, and that is while he is still with us. If one of the flowers. placed upon the coffin of the dead. were given to the. living, how much more good it would do. If one of the loving words, spoken over the remains of our fellow- man. were spoken to him while struggling along life's rugged pathway; it would be of infinitely more benefit. The lady mentioned above could not help the mummy, however much she may have desired it. But no more can we gladden the (lead or help them in any way. Therefore let the kind words and deeds. which we so readily give the dead be given to the living. and they may cheer the heart of some weary wanderer. and renew the cour- age of some disheartened fellow-man. There is but one generation we can serve *5 our own generation. \Ve can not serve the past. \Ve can. in an indirect yvav serve the future: "VVho lives to bless his age and time Has lived for all the ages.“ \Ve study the history of the past in order to learn to avoid doing the deeds that have brought other individuals and nations to de- struction. and. profiting by their example. follow their steps wherever we find them in the right direction. Our object then in re- viewing the past is to be better enabled to serve our own time and generation. \ch have the experience of the past by which to be guided. This being the case. there is no rea— son why our time should not be better than any former time. We often hear the opinion expressed that our time is the most degener- ate time that the world has ever seen: that By a humanity is constantly on the decline. little observation we shall soon find that the men who entertain this pessimistic idea are the very ones who do nothing to make their time better, who are so busily occupied in grumbling that they find no time for other pursuits. Looking at our time in such a light there can not be that cheerfulness which is an absolute necessity in the hearts of those Who shall accomplish the least for the bettering and uplifting of fallen humanity. Let us on the other hand go to the work with the feel- ing that the world is constantly progressing. and that our energies and our talents, be they ever so small. are desired in the great work of bringing humanity from‘ the bondage of sin. of vice and misery to the wonderful free- dom which alone the children of God can en- joy. Let us go cheerfully to the work, being assured that as truly as God is mightier than Satan. so is God's kingdom mightier than Sa- tan's kingdom and must conquer in the end. This assurance can alone imbue us with that eheerfulness and courage which will enable us to serve our time and generation to the best advantage. This service may not be in any great measure. seen from a human stand- point. It will mainly consist in the little, kind deeds and loving words which we shall find occasion to do and say in the every-day- course of our lives. Thus can we serve our time in such a way that the coming generation shall have less occasion to complain than the present. 671:; "ac/Io“. Read not to contradict nor to believe, but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested: that is to be read only in parts, others to be read but curiously, and some few to be read wholly with diligence and atten- tion. - Readng maketh a full man, conference a ready, and writing an exact man; therefore,if a man write little, he had need of a great memory; if he confer little, he had need of present wit; and if he read little, he had need have much cunning to seem to know what he doth not know. As long as this rugged earth is fair, And gold is mixed with dust. The day is sometimes long, And longer. mayhap, the night. But Hope speaks to the anxious heart, That at last ~twill all be right. A storm comes on apace, lts deepening wing-beats heard; But calm dwells inmost in the soul, A sheltered, twittering bird. \Vhat if the dreary day And the sleepless night be long! His soul has Wings for the stiffening breeze, And his heart is filled with song. Urillie/m Perm-sen. Jame Ultanye: in (/10 Curriculum a! fluysbury Jam/nary. A good school is a growing school — usu- ally. Once in a great while — seldom, in- deed, but sometime — a break must be made in the life of even the most conservative in- stitution. And Augsburg Seminary is not such a moss-grown institution that it cannot respond to demands that are reasonable and just. The question is really as to the proper time for making a change that is felt more and more to be necessary. The announcement of a few changes to be inaugurated will undoubtedly be welcome to many of the students and friends of Augsburg. Not that Augsburg Seminary has not served the interests of its students and our people well heretofore, but only that it intends as an institution of learning to serve those interests still better as years pass. There are a few principles of education that must never be lost sight of as long as Augsburg shall remain an educational force to our people. It must be a Christian, Lutheran, American and democratic institution; i. e. it must work unflinchinly for the inculcation of the funda- mental doctrines of Christianity, for the build- ing up of a genuine, free, healthy, living Lutheran Church; it must educate men to understand. to cherish freedom and free insti- tutions in church and state. Never has this been more necessary than at the present time. The curriculum is a means to this end. From all sides complaints are lodged against Colleges and theological Seminaries that they send out learned but impractical graduates and candidates. Once in a while the complaint is made that the ministers talk over the heads of their congregations. They speak (or read from manuscript) eloquently enough about things that are difiicult to understand, but they do not touch the hearts and the consciences of the common folk. Show less

Show moreAU’GSBURG EKKO 159 is winning victories every day and wrong is all the time falling back bafiled and beaten. Nothing, in the long run. can avert the aw- ful penalties which outraged truth will wreak upon its calumniators. This applies to the many and mighty just as much as to the few and frail m» not only to individuals. but to nations. Extensity of dominion, vastness of resources, power of arms, ingenuity and skill W nothing can insure a nation against the in- evitable Punishment of cupidity or pride when it violates the precepts of justice and truth in its intercourse with other races. This. time has ever told. and it will keep on telling until eternity's dawning shall mark the final downfall of sin and wrong. The evils which to-day ‘oppress mankind will disappear just as fast as the race is lifted up into higher sphere of thought and action —— not by any force inherant in man but by the divine power of Christian faith. We reckon too little with this factor when we cast about for relief from the evils of which we complain. Bring the sacred precepts of Christanity to bear up on all phases of social and political life and it will be vastly easier to correct the evils which prey upon society. Let Christendom awaken to a fuller realiz- ation of the true Christian doctrine concern- ing man‘s rightful use of material wealth. recognizing, as it does. not absolute owner- ship but responsible stewardship, and it will in itself do more to minimize poverty and want than any system of socialismm'hich is at best but an experimental attempt at a scien- tific regulation of selfishness. Let truth revolutionize diplomacy, and it surely will if applied to it —— and be ever consulted in national and international affairs. and wars will not always threaten the peace of world and bring sorrow and tears into the million homes. 0. U. S. — Prof. Nydahl has bought a house near the Trinity church, 20th ave. between 9th str. S. and Franklin ave. 6/19 Wen; fluidity. Augsburg Seminary has outgrown its pres— ent quarters and the supporters of the school have voted to build a modern building at a cost of $30,000.00. Plans are now being pre— pared with a view of providing suitable school- rooms,Chapel, library and reading rooms.labor— atory, offices etc. The building will be two stories with basement. The attendance has steadily increased and especially has the growth of the College de« partment been marked. The number of stu- dents in the College has nearly been doubled during the last two years. Augsburg Seminary when it was moved to Minneapolis in 1872 was small. Its growth has been steady from that time on in spite of the financial and other‘diifioulties it has had to contend with. The number of its friends though small at first. has grown to be a' host until to- day they are found all over the Union. Its early supporters were poor as well as few. but they gave liberally of their little for the cause Augsburg Seminary represented. and they are as ready to give of their larger means today for the same cause. \Vc look to the pioneers for inspiration when it comes to continuingr the work so carefully begun and nurtured. They laid the foundation well. Let 11s therefore put our shoulder to the wheel and push that Augsburg that has been so much to us. may still advance and widen its influence among our people. 0/ Jludies. Studies serve for pastime. for ornaments. for abilities: their chief use for pastime is in privateness and retiring: for ornaments in dis- course; and for ability in judgment; for ex- pert men can execute. but learned men are more fit to judge and censure.
