Has not Christ made us free? Is not the law once removed for- ever? And at this point the average protestant. especial- ly if he is of Euro- p e a n background, d e l i v e r a lengthy talk about the academic a n d religious freedoms. How about our freedom, are we as Christians free without limitations? will Rev. Karlis Ozolins, ’51 Campus Pastor Sure. we are free from sin, guilt, consequences of sin, free from temptations, free from slavery of base passions, free from subjection to the world, the evil, “and all that pertaineth there-unto.” Yes, we are in a sense free from the Law, provided that in essence, we have taken the Law and have made it our own Way and Life. Free from letter, but bound to the principles. And certainly we rejoice and should rejoice about such liberty and freedom. But now—is not the new allegiance to Jesus Christ creating new ties and obligations? Obligations that limit our freedom—to the realm of God’s Will? Or don’t the Scriptures, that we know as the criterion of truth, limit our freedom—at this point the academic freedom of a Christian College—to the realm of this truth. And finally. does not the Church have the right to regulate, to pattern, its members’ functions and actions? Provided that we understand this interrelationship as vital as the Scripture describes it—the members and the body, whereby are thought as dependent and obedient. As I understand, Christian liberty therefore, is that we have freedom of action, motion, and thought inside of this threefold realm: the realm of God’s Will in Christ the realm of the Word—bound to its truth the realm of the Church—with its teachings and fellowship Being free from sin, world, and satan, we are bound under the yoke of Christ. That yoke is mild and it is carried voluntarily. (We have the freedom to cast it away—to break it—which freedom we don’t think of exercising—which means to fall back into the old slavery of sin). 50 instead of speaking and emphasizing freedom, why not spend more thoughts and more time about our Christian duties, about our responsibilities, about our obedience to Christ, about a needed discipline and meth~ od in Christian lives, about the meaning of the Law through which the Message of the Gospel receives new immediacy. Some will classify me here as an impossible old timer. But this truth is as old as the Scriptures themselves. Remove all sentences in the New Testament that teach: obligations, rules, maxims, regulations, councils, advice. Omit all imperatives, apostolic orders, commands and commandments—you won’t have much left. Even our Scripture portion for today won't be there. Also we, as we begin a new academic year, many com- mit an error of misplaced emphasis—by setting too much of our thinking on freedom, forgetting the matters of order, obligations, self discipline, duties of yielding to principles that are set for our personal and our common benefit—as to souls and fellowship of believers. Although the feeling of freedom should be predomi- nant, nevertheless we should feel compelled voluntarily to submit ourselves under the authority of God, the Word of God in our case, the authority of the school—its rules, regulations and leaders. A misuser of freedom will think—what can I get and how to get by with it. A loyal member of the academic community instead will wish to become a part of our school, subject to rules, steward of its riches, builder of its future. As we approach another academic year, let us endeavor to become fitting foundation stones whom God, the Master Builder may use for his purposes, as He ties and joins us with the mortar of His Holy Teachings to a structure and edifice of his own likings. Let us be fitting stones, for the disobedient, the inde- pendent, the unpredictable: the uncut stones are not fit for God’s building purposes.
