Subject: Academic Quality Improvement Program Update Submitter: Barbara Edwards Farley, Academic Dean, Academic and Student Affairs Message: Augsburg elected to join the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) in 2001. AQIP is an alternative process through which Augsburg can maintain its accredited status with the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. AQIP's seven-year continuous improvement cycle replaces the comprehensive self-study and site visit that occurred every ten years. An AQIP Public Folder has been placed in the "Committees" folder located in "Orgs Home." You will find the following documents: 1) AQIP Criteria, 2) AQIP Fact Sheet, 3) Systems Portfolio (submitted May 15, 2005 ö also posted on President's webpage), 4) Systems Portfolio Index, and 5) Systems Appraisal Feedback Report. We are planning to develop an AQIP webpage this summer that will archive the College's AQIP projects. The College will complete its first seven-year cycle of participation in AQIP in 2007-2008. The next major milestones include attending a Strategy Forum in Chicago (May, 2006), hosting a Site Visit (most likely Spring, 2007), and submitting an application for Reaffirmation of Accreditation (2007-2008). The Systems Appraisal Feedback Report is AQIP's response to Augsburg's Systems Portfolio. The Systems Appraisal Team concluded that "Augsburg College has presented evidence that it complies with each of the Five Criteria for Accreditation and each of their Core Components." This is very good news for the College and reflects the important accomplishments of Augsburg's faculty, staff, and students! Special thanks to the members of the AQIP Steering Committee for their oversight of Augsburg's AQIP initiatives. Subject: Does the library still buy books? Submitter: Susan A Certain, Acquisitions Coordinator, Library Message: The answer to that question is a resounding YES! As Lindell Library strives to provide support for a wide array of curriculum needs, we are ordering as many books as ever (plus we order nonprint formats such as DVD, VHS, CD, and E-Book). Increasingly, orders are placed electronically. One of the most useful benefits of the internet is that out-of-print books and dealers are included. Through the internet we have the ability, when an old classic needs to be replaced, to find a source, verify availability and condition, and aquire it quickly. In fact, we could not function very well without the internet; it has become an integral part of acquiring and providing access to all forms of information for YOU, the information seeker. Subject: Polka Party! Submitter: Margaret M Dornfeld, Student Message: Come to a dinner with live polka music on Wednesday, April 12 in East Commons. Senior Citizens from the surrounding area will be coming as well. Dinner will be served from 5:30-6:30 and is provided by Campus Kitchens. Dancing will begin at 6:30. There will also be BINGO with prizes. Please contact Maggie at dornfeld@augsburg.edu or call x6532 for more information. Subject: Gulf Coast Artist Lori Gordon to give talk Friday! Submitter: Kerry Morgan, Coordinator of Galleries and Exhibits, Art Message: Lori Gordon, one of eight artists whose work is currently on view in the Minneapolis Room, will be giving a public slide presentation at 11 a.m . in Lindell 16. (3/11/06) -- Augsburg College's Tonnisha Bell (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) earned her third All- American honors in the women's 55-meter dash in her career, finishing second by one-hundredth of a second in the finals of the event at the NCAA Division III indoor track and field national championships on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf College's Tostrud Center. Bell finished second in the finals of the event with a 7.10-second time; Shanda Jackson of Lincoln (Pa.), the defending national champion in the event, won the title with a 7.09 -second finish. The top five finishers among the eight finalists in the event finished within five-hundredths of a second of each other. The second-place finish is Bell's best in NCAA championship events and the third All-American honor of her career. She finished sixth in the 55-meter dash in both 2003 and 2005, qualifying for the national meet in the event every year of her career. The finish is also the best for an Auggie track and field athlete at a national meet since Carrie Lind finished second in consecutive years in the indoor women's 20-pound weight throw in 1999 and 2000. Bell has been one of the dominant sprinters in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference during her career. Bell has qualified for every NCAA national championship meet during her track career at Augsburg -- four indoor national meets and three outdoor national meets -- and has won nine Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships (six indoor, three outdoor) and earned All-MIAC honors 13 times (nine indoor, four outdoor) during her career. Augsburg has qualified individuals in 53 different women's track and field events to national meets in school history (48 NCAA, five NAIA). Augsburg women's athletes have now earned 28 All-American honors and eight individual national championships in track and field in school history. http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/031006bell.html Also, Bell was named NCAA Division III Central Region Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, and also was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outstanding Female Track Athlete from the MIAC indoor championships last weekend. Bell won MIAC titles in the women's 55- and 200-meter dashes at the conference indoor championships, repeating her sprint double championship from last season. She won each event for the third time in her career, having won the 200-meter dash the last three years and the 55-meter dash her freshman, junior and senior years. She also placed third in the long jump at the MIAC meet.
