Titled "The Miracle in Mnnesota," the story by Amy Farnum covers Bowman's recovery after rrissing all last season due to a heart defect. During a preseason scrimrrage last August, Bow man collapsed on the field and nearly died. He was diagnosed with a formof anomalous coronary artery heart defect -- a very rare condition that usually kills 80 percent of its victinns before it is diagnosed. In layman's terms, one of Bowrran's arteries was located in the wrong place since his birth. Bowman was forced to have a difficult open-heart surgery at the Mnneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital on Sept. 12, 2008, to correct the ailment, and missed the entire 2008 season. He came back to the bench following the surgery in late Septerrber, but was unable to play. However, his presence was a strong support to an Augsburg team that qualified for the NCAA Division Ill national playoffs for the first tine in school history. Bowman has made a full recovery, and has returned to the Augsburg men's soccer team, currently ranked No. 15 nationally. Bow man has started each of Augsburg's eight garres as a midfielder, playing 504 of the tears 762 rrinutes so far this season. He scored his first collegiate goal in Augsburg's 4-2 win over St. John's on Sept. 16. Augsburg hosts No. 21-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh in a non conference game on Friday (9/25) at 7 p.m at Edor Nelson Field. The foreign-born population comprises 7% of the entire Minnesota population, as compared to 13% nationwide, and includes documented and undocumented individuals representing a wide range of ages, cultural backgrounds, educational backgrounds and skill levels. The econonic irpact of intrigrants in today's econonry is very large. Some key facts about contributions of imrigrants are: * The U.S. Council of Economic Advisers estimates that the country's net gain from imnigration is $37 billion per year. * Imnigrant-ow ned businesses in Mnnesota generated $331 nillion dollars in net income to the state in 2000. * Hspanic-owned firms in the state have grown 350% since 1990. * Foreign-born workers account for the majority of growth in the labor force in Mnnesota. * Nationally immigrants represent 25% of physicians and 40% of engineers holding doctoral degrees. Research clearly shows that inrigration stirrulates job creation as industries expand and hire new workers to supply the growing need for goods and services. Without new , young workers, certain sectors of the economy will contract, and continue to contract. For example, one estimate deronstrated that if inrrigrants were renoved fromthe labor force Minnesota w ould lose over 24,000 permanent jobs and $1.2 billion in personal income. In Septermber and October we celebrate the contribution of Hspanics in the United States, so we highlight their contributions here. The Hispanic farrily in the United States today has more workers than the average non-Hispanic fanrly. Specifically, the Hispanic household averages 3.4 persons, with 1.6 of those being wage earners, while the typical non-Hspanic household has 2.4 persons and only 1.3 are wage earners. Between 1980 and 2006, the total US. labor force increased by 41.65 percent, or 44.6 million workers. Hspanics contributed 14.5 million workers to this nurrber, accounting for nearly a one third increase in the U.S. labor force during the last 26 years. At the sare time, mean households income among Hspanics show ed an inpressive grow th rate of 56 percent in real dollars, which rose from $32,335 in 1972 to $50,575 in 2006. The aggregated net worth of the U.S. Hspanic population reached $945 billion in 2006, a stunning 111.1 percent increase from 1996. A recent study show ed that U.S. Hspanic's purchasing power surged to nearly $870 billion in 2008 and is projected to reach as much as $1.3 trillion by 2015. In Mnnesota, corprehensive federal imrigration reformis essential if the state is to continue to realize the fiscal benefits of imrigration. Such reformmust include increases in visas to match the demand for labor as well as legal path tow ard long-termemployrrent. There is also a critical need for local efforts to ensure that full social and econorric integration of inrigrants such as state-sponsored programs to inprove high school graduation rates for youth, and errployer-sponsored programs that ensure opportunities for job training and advancerrent. The need for reformis exemplified by a U.S. Labor Department report that the nation has an inmediate shortage of 126,000 nurses, and rural Mnnesota faces a predicted shortage of 8,000 RNs by 2019. There are widely discrepant estimates, and disagreements, about who qualifies as an inrrigrant, how many inrrigrants reside in Mnnesota. The most specific indications of whois an immigrant come froma census question about "place of birth." However, Inrrigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official use the term inmigrant’ much differently, in reference to anyone who has been issued a permanent resident visa or green card. Based on the nurrbers from the census (fromplace of birth), there were 334,000 foreign-born Minnesotans in 2007, representing 6.5% of the population. Of these there are an estimate 60,000-80,000 undocumented residents in Minnesota. It is important to note there is little agreement about what different terms means, such as “inmrigrant" and "foreign-born" are often used interchangeably. The lesson that we can draw fromthis article is that inrrigrants constitute an irportant resource to our nation and to our great state of Mnnesota. Due to their entrepreneurial activity, consumer spending, tax payments, and participation in the labor force as along with less tangible, but no less irportant contributions, they are vital to the social and cultural fabric of our United States of Arrerica.
