Bryd- ningerne blandt Folket om Menigheden og ,,Samfundet’’, om Menigheden skal reises og ,,Samfundet’’ dermed ruineres, er en Frugt af Augsbuig. Shakalerne og Revene i Ruinerne lader sine Hyl hgre isamme Grad, som Augsburg arbeider. Gaar Lererne 1 Aandens Skole og tror paa Menighedens Sag, skal det lykkes Augsburg mere end hidtil at lede Stu- denterne og derigjennem at bygge Herrens Menighed. Vi ser det — det er aabenbart for alles Mine, at Herren lager det saa, at denne Skole skal faa yde ganske meget til Menighedens Gjenopreisning. Det hgrer ogsaa med, at Studenterne under Opholdet her ved Skolen faar praktisk Deli Arbeidet. De maa faa Anled- ning til at virke ogsaa udenfor Skolens Vegge. Den Mvelse, de derved faar, vil siden ha sin Virkning udover Landet, for ikke at tale om den Velsignelse, de vil kunne udéve rundt om 1 Minneapolis. Her bor Lererne ikke alene selv foregaa dem med et folgeverdigt Eksempel, men ogsaa opmuntre og lede dem i dette praktiske Arbeide.

Denne Resignation kom midt under Festlighederne som et tungt Overraskelsens og Smertens Slag. Ole Paulson acting as chairman of the meeting, the following resolutions were un- animously adopted: RESOLVED, That the Board of Trustees of Augsburg Sem- inary hereby wish to express their heartfelt thanks to Prof. Sven Oftedal for his long and faithful service to the Seminary and the Lutheran Free Church as president of the Board of Trustees and protessor of Augsburg Seminary, and especially for his most valuable and succesful work for the erection of the new Seminary Building, and, THAT, it is with the greatest regret that the Board of Trustees have received the resignation of Prof. Oftedal, and, THAT, it is the sense of this Board that while Prof. Ofte- dal naturally may have become exhausted and tired through his long and arduous work for the Seminary, it would be of the greatest detriment to the school and the Free Church if he should now sever his connections with the Seminary, and, THAT, the Board of Trustees, therefore unanimously and most earnestly do request Prof. Sven Oftedal to remain as professor of Augsburg Seminary, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that for the above reasons the resignation 1s not accepted.”’ Desforuden vedtoges enstemmig i M@gdet fglgende i sam- me Anledning og af Pastorerne E. The principal ornament of the building, however, is the exceed- ingly effective relief given to the front by the prostyle portico with its columns of polished red granite in front. The rear elevation is made to look finished by a buttressed projection surrounding the entrance and forming a diminutive balcony under the large and artistic windows lighting the first and second story halls from this side. However, the true character of the building must be judged by its interior plan and construction. Here we find the designs in perfect harmony with the exterior. The sym- bolical figure of a lighted torch in the terra cotta of the ex- terior is again found in the only ornamentation of the inte- rior —the stucco-work of the chapel. The general impression given by the interior plan is the generous proportion of halls and rooms andthe easy andconvenient arrangement ofevery — detail. There are no low ceilings, not even in the basement, and no dark halls. Broad halls, the entrances to which are | so arranged as to admit a rich flow of light through glass- paneled doors and well lighted vestibules, run through the whole length of all floors, and trom these halls every part of the building is conveniently reached. From either front or rear the interior is reached through vestibules with inlaid colored tile floor and with white tile wainscoting. A landing opens on a flight ofsteps ahead lead- ing to the hallof the first floor, and stairs to the right and left leading to the basement. With the exception of the stairs, the wood-work in all parts of the basement is of white pine. The floor is of ordinary sidewalk flagstones. Here library, reading room, gymnasium, lavatories, the nucleus of the Augsburg museum, and in the north-east corncr the repair room and the boiler room, are located. They are indicated on the diagram of the floor plan. The floors of all ordinary rooms here as elsewhere in the building are of hard pine. The lavatories have tile floors and are perfectly equipped with tub- and shower baths and every other modern acces- sory. Every floor directly above is similarly equipped, the

The pilasters have Ionic capitals, above which is seen the architrave continuing around the circular recess, the fest- ooned frieze, and the heavy cornice. The base of the vaulted ceiling is formed by a broad frieze running around the whole room, consisting of a series of symbolical figures, alternately a shield and a lighted torch. The second floor is reached from the same landing as the main entrance to the chapel. The hall on this floor is very spacious and furnishes a good promenade for the five classes that have their home on this floor. One room on this floor is at present set aside for the use of the Lutheran Board of Missions and one for the Board of Trustees of the Seminary. This hall is lighted by a skylight and by the large window in the rear seen on one of the cuts. Twelve large floor lights of rough plate glass admit light from the skylight to the first story below. | Any one who ever finds his way into the attic will un- doubtedly regret that so. much space should be unoccupied. The large vents which ventilate every room in the building here unite and enter the smokestack. Anyone wishing to go futher up climbs a long and steep ladder and creeps onto the gravel roof. He finds the flat graveled roof spacious, but when his eye has also taken in the large expanse of sloping slate, he has received a true impression of the dimensions of the new building. A great many details, suchas complete sewer connections, lighting, etc., making up a well-equipped modern school build- ing, have necessarily been omitted in this description. Vi havde omkring $4,000 1 Kassen. Saaledes kom vi til Frikirkens Mode i Montevideo. Det var et aandelig beveget og befrugtet Méde. Men en forun- derlig Fglelse af Afmagt og Mismod hvilede over Forsamlin- gen i Forhold til Augsburg. Beslutningen angaaende den nye Bygning aander deraf. Ingen Frimodighed og ingen Handlekraft deri. Show moreThe New Building. Description by Prof. H. A. Urseth. The New Seminary Building occupies the south-west cor- ner of the Seminary grounds, fronting towards Eighth Street. [t is built practically on a level with the other buildings on the grounds and presents a rather imposing elevation when seen from the street below. This impression cannot be con- veyed by any photograph, as a camera necessarily must be placed at some distance to be able to focus such a large ob- ject. Furthermore, the large and symmetrical scale on which every detail of the building is drawn, the simplicity of con- struction, and the uniformity in dimension (about 100x100 feet) combine to deceive the eye both when the structure is seenfrom a distance andas a solitary object on anengraving. Of architecture and construction on the whole the engrav- ing of course gives a sufficiently clear idea. The architecture is uniformly classic, leaving on the mind that impression of simplicity and harmony which characterizes especially pu- rely Greek architecture. The material used in construction for exterior walls above foundation is mottled brown or old gold-colored pressed brick with Kasota stone and terra cotta. The cornices, acroteria on porches and roof, and rail- ings on porch and projections are of galvanized iron. The roof is slate. The ornamentations by which the wall surfaces are relieved, aside from arches and belts in the brick-work proper, consist mainly in panels of terra cotta above the first story windows and between the windows ofthe gymna-
