Most educational institutions in America which have lived a century or more have ' metamorphized in some way from their original format. Such change is dramatically ‘seen in Augsburg's history. Augsburg has :changed its location, its educational character, its curriculum, and its constitu- encies in the way which is a credit to those who refused to let intransigence and traditional approaches quench the aeffectiveness of the school. a Liberal and advanced educational ideas have been around Augsburg from its very outset. Beginning as a seminary a century ago, it soon added a college department, A then a preparatory department. Later it dropped the preparatory department or academy; then the Seminary was merged academy; then the seminary was merged _ lives as a full-fledged liberal arts college. Curriculum offerings have moved with the need of the times and calendars have , likewise shifted. Four different constitu- encies have backed Augsburg during its century of existence. And when the move to a suburban location was vetoed in 1946, the change from a college with a traditionally rural orientation to a new kind of collegiate breed—a city college— was assured. Fears have been expressed at every turn, but the willingness and the courage to change has assured Augsburg's continued relevance to the present. Such courage must be one of the essential elements for a viable future. To prepare for the future, however, may take the greatest courage of all, particularly at this point in time. The past has been precarious. the future is no less precarious. Augsburg is not exempt from the dire predictions regarding the future of the private college. No hope, is the verdict of many. Augsburg is caught in the relentless cost squeeze that has outdistanced the support of the church and threatens to surpass the ability of students to pay for our kind of education. Augsburg confronts a highly competitive educational scene but with accrued assets from the past which are somewhat meager. Augsburg is not immune to the turbulent unrest which marks the agony of a society caught between ideals and performance. Augsburg faces the gigantic task not only of making good its offer of an education with quality but, more tangibly, of developing the costly land area to which we have laid claim as the only adequate campus for this urban college of the future. The obstacles have never been more formidable. However, for the past five years, not without trepidation, we confess, Augsburg has struggled to move ahead despite the ominous signs on the horizon. A new century of education for service lies ahead, and ourCentennial development phase from 1964 to 1969 has attempted with some degree of success to set the stage for a new decade in a new century in the faith that the need for education in the spirit of Augsburg will not soon disappear. Like Joshua, we stand at the threshold of a strange land. The pilgrimage of decades gone has been filled with wonders under courageous leadership in the past. For us the question is: will there be Show less

We are heirs to the same fears as Joshua but to us as to him comes the repeated admonition from One greater than ourselves: “Be strong and of good courage " And with Joshua let our response be as it was to the people of Israel: "Prepare' There is a land to be conquered." During this Centennial year, then, we shall be about our preparations for the second century. a stronger faculty, a relevant curriculum, an improved student body, better academic and residential laCilities, a debt load reduced to manageable proportions, a well-conceived campus plan, and, above all. a greater commitment to the Christian Ideal of serVIce to all men in the spirit of Jesus. Our Centennial commits us to seek anew the courage for this task. and so we pray: Lord, give us the courage to see that we and all our human institutions are not absolutely essentlal to you. We are, indeed, expendable. But as long as you give us and the instruments with whlch we work a place ln your plan, grant us that lortltude 0/ faith which is born out of confidence in your grace, your wisdom and your strength. This was interpreted from the very beginning as service to church and community, If it takes courage to begin, it often takes more courage to survive The one hundred years of Augsburg have been tenuous at best, marked, it seems, with continual struggle to stay alive. The threat of extinc- tion has never been completely removed. Economic depressions, agricultural disasters, world wars, struggling constitu- encies, ecclesiastical dissension, and depressed surroundings have raised serious questions for a century regarding the college's continuation Meager financial resources, a short supply of instructors, fluctuating student bodies. shifting church support. all have tested the courage of ill-paid and over-worked administrators and faculty members alike. For seventy years a small church body gallantly sacrificed for Augsburg College and one reading of history might be that had there been no Lutheran Free Church to hold Augsburg to its heart for seven decades as its only institution of higher education, the school may well have closed its d00rs as have scores of small colleges over the past century. Augsburg has lived on, not because of the discovery of wealthy donors. or the creation of a huge endowment. or the building of a large and affluent group of alumni, or the cultivation of a broad. country-wide constituency. Only the Christian courage of a comparatively small number of dedicated persons has given Augsburg survival strength for these one hundred years. This courage was also courageous enough Show less

Show moreMiss Gerda Mortensen, Professor Emeritus and Executive Secretary of the Augsburg College Centennial Committee, served here as the first Dean of Women and Associate Dean of Students for 41 years, from 1923 to 1964. Her wide teaching and travel experiences, and her cheerful, constructive advice have influenced several generations of students. Miss Mortensen, who graduated from the University of Minnesota and Columbia University, holds membership in a variety of professional organizations, including the American Association of University Women, the American Personnel and Guidance Association, the National Associ- ation of Women Deans and Counselors, and the Association of Lutheran College Faculties. She has arranged and administered an impressive number at Centennial activities over the past four years, providing the college and the entire Twin Cities commun- ity with an array of distinguished guests who have appeared on campus for Scandinavian-American cultural events and at symposiums dealing with topics vital to the welfare of the nation and the world. Through Truth to Freedom: A Hundred Years in Education for Service. Gerda Mortensen America Fever was a disease that swept the Scandinavian countries, especially Norway, during the middle part of the last century. In Norway it began in the period 1825-1850, with mounting contagion after the passage of the Homestead Act of 1862, escalating in the 1880’s and abating only at the turn of the century. Thousands of people had sought the cure by emigrating to America, that land of fantastic economic opportunity, where freedom- loving people in a free land could build a future; where hopes and dreams could become reality. They came, many of them, with all their worldly possessions packed into their small sea chests together with a food supply sufficient for the 13-week voyage across the Atlantic. Generally among their posses- sions were some choice item from their home, a Bible and hymn book. The immigrants brought their language, their sense of values, their culture, their social, political. intellectual and spiritual inheritance to their new home. This was all to become an integral part of their transplanted culture. The deep religious movements astir in Norway (one led by Hans Nielsen Hauge, a layman, another by Professor Gisle Johnson at the University of Oslo) as well as the concepts of the established church of Norway moved to America. In harmony with the spirit of the Hauge and Johnson movements. Augsburg Seminary was founded in Marshall, Wisconsin, in 1869. The first president was Professor August Weenaas. Augsburg was then relocated in Minneapolis near the University of Minnesota, a move actively promoted by Rev. Ole Paulson, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Congregation. Rev. Paulson was affectionately called “Augsburg‘s Grandfather" the last years of his life. Dr. Carl H. Chrislock, professor of history and head of the department at Augsburg College, is currently writing a graphic account of Augsburg's first 100 years. The history, From Fjord to Freeway: A Centennial History, will be ready for the Festival Month of October, 1969. “Augsburg was founded to be a channel for the work of God. . .to the people... the rooms at Augsburg are not big, but they are big enough for a student to find truth in and through his studies. . .and to find peace in living this truth throughout his life" . . .adapted from the dedication speech given in 1875 by Professor Georg Sverdrup. In this spirit Augsburg College moves into its Centennial Year. Show less
