Craig Henry (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn/Centennial HS) and Joe Pierce (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) were named to the All-MIAC baseball squad, leading a contingent of SIX Augsburg College players who earned various All-MIAC honors. Henry was also named to the American Baseball Coaches Association Division III All-Midwest Region squad as a second-team catcher. James Panning (SR, Gibbon, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS), Brent Kolbow (FY, Forest Lake, Minn.) and Donald Blunt (SO, Richfield, Minn.) were named as All-MIAC Honorable Mention selections, and Jon Rudolph (SR, Elk River, Minn.) was named to the All—MIAC Sportsmanship Team. Acatcher, Henry earned All-MIAC honors for the third straight season, one of only two MIAC juniors to earn All-MIAC first-team baseball honors each of their first three campaigns. Statistically, Henry had the best year of his career in 2009, hitting .395 (47—of-119) with 34 runs scored, 13 doubles, three triples, two home runs and a team-best 34 RBI. He had a .605 slugging percentage and .450 on-base percentage. Defensively, Henry had a .974 fielding percentage, with just six errors in 227 defensive chances. Henry threw out 18 runners attempting to steal bases in 47 attempts — tops among MIAC catchers in overall statistics. In league gamesonly, Henry hit .431, ranking sixth-best among league players (playing in 75 percent of a team's games), while also ranking srxth With a .677 slugging percentage and sixth with 28 hits. His nine runners caught stealing in 25 attempts was also a league‘best. n his first season as a starting first-baseman, Pierce was at or near the top for the Auggies in most hitting categories, with a .team-best 410 batting average (480f-117), to go along with a team-best 15 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 29 runs scored, 33 RBI, a .607 slugging percentage and .489 on-base percentage. Defensively, he had a .983 fielding percentage, with just four errors in 240 chances. In MIAC gamesonly, Pierce stood 14th among league hitters with a .394 batting average, while his .652 slugging percentage was ninth-best, his 26 hits were eighth-best and his 20 RBI were fifth-best. He had a conference-high 12 doubles in league play. His .410 overall batting average was seventh-best among MIAC players in overall play. A three-year Augsburg outfielder after spending his initial collegiate campaign at Gustavus, Panning had the best year of his career in 2009, hitting .398 (47of-118) with 33 runs scored, seven doubles, three triples, one homer and 25 RBI, to go along with a .534 slugging percentage and .448 on- base percentage. Augsburg finished with a stroke average of 313.62 and a 52-38 record (.578) against opponents in the fall half of the 2008-09 season. The Auggies had a balanced attack, with six golfers averaging 82.0 strokes or better during the fall half of the campaign. Augsburg was led by newcomer Tony Vanyo (JR, Circle Pines, Minn/Centennial HS), who finished second in the individual race at the MIAC championships (219), just a stroke away from tying for medalist honors in the best individual conference-meet finish for an Auggie golfer since 1999. Forward Tiffany Magnuson (SR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) was named the 2008-09 recipient of the MlAC's Sheila Brown Award, in addition to earning All-MIAC first-team honors for the fourth straight season. Magnuson was also selected as an alternate for the 32— player field to compete at the 2009 NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge, to be held on April 10 at the Men's Division I Frozen Four in Washington, DC. In January, she was selected as one of 68 finalists for selection to the event. Magnuson, who led the team in every scoring category this season — nine goals, 10 assists for 19 points - was named to the All-MIAC first team for the fourth straight season, becoming just the second Auggie in the 14year history of the women's hockey program to earn All-MIAC first-team honors each of her four seasons. Lauren Chezick (2002-05) was the first Auggie to earn All-MIAC first-team honors all four of her seasons. Magnuson was one of only three Class of 2009 seniors to earn All-MIAC first-team honors each of their four seasons. The MlAC's Shelia Brown Award is named for Brown, the longtime athletic director at the College of St. Catherine who died from cancer in 2005. The award is given to a senior women‘s hockey player who has made a long-term contribution to her team‘s success and who has consistently competed with good sportsmanship. Recipients are chosen based on four criteria — team leadership, sportsmanship and volunteer work, academic excellence and hockey skills/ production. The lone senior on the squad, Magnuson finished her career with 99 points (65 goals, 34 assists) in 98 career games, finishing in second place in school history in career goals, third in career points and sixth in career assists. Joining Magnuson in earning All-MIAC recognition from Augsburg was Brya Erickson (80, New Brighton, Minn./lrondale HS), who was named All-MIAC honorable-mention, and Jess Olson (JR, Hamel, Minn./Wayzata HS), who was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. Erickson, a defender, had three goals and five goals for eight assists in her first Augsburg campaign, tops among Augsburg defenders and 11th among MIAC defenders in overall scoring (all games). Olson, a defender, contributed five assists this season. In 73 career games, Olson has seven goals and 15 assists for 22 career points. Forward Chris Johnson (JR, Verona, Wis/Madison Memorial HS) received several postseason honors, being named as a second-team West Region selection to the American Hockey Coaches Association/RBK Hockey Division lll Men's All-American squad, as a US. College Hockey Online All-USCHO Division III West honorable-mention selection, and as an All-MIAC first-team selection. It was his third All-MIAC honor, earning first-team honors this season after receiving all-conference honorable—mention honors his first two seasons. A team captain this year, Johnson finished the 200809 season as the MIAC's scoring champion in both overall and conference play. In overall play, Johnson led the league in both points (42) and assists (28), while standing fifth in goals (14). in league gamesonly, Johnson led the league in points (33) and assists (22), while standing second in goals (11). He finished the 2008-09 season with a consecutive-game point streak of 12 straight games, claiming a goal or assist in 21 of Augsburgs 26 games this season. Among NCAA Division III players nationally, Johnson finished 13th in points per-game (1.62) and 10th in assists per-game (1.08). In 77 career games at Augsburg, Johnson has 30 goals and 57 assists for 87 points. Jim Jensen (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) joined Johnson in receiving All-MIAC first-team honors, while teammates Nick Guran (FY, McHenry, lll./McHenry East HS), Andrew Kent (SR, Lakeville, Minn.) and Joel Sauer (80, Madison, Wis/Memorial HS) earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors. In league gamesonly, Jensen's 20 points ranked ninth among league players, while his 10 goals ranked fifth and his 10 assists ranked 14th. In 50 career games, Jensen has 23 goals and 25 assists for 48 points. Guran was the top scorer among first-year players in the MIAC this season, leading the league‘s rookies in both goals (16) and points (31), while standing fifth in assists (15). In league play, he also led the MIAC in first-year goals (11) and points (21), while standing tied for second in assists (10). Among MIAC players in overall stats, he was eighth in points and third in goals, while standing fifth in points in league games-only and second in goals. Kent saw action in all but 40 minutes of play for the Auggies this season, with a 3.96 goals-against—average and .882 save percentage. He had 12 games with 30-plus saves this season, including seven games with 35-plus saves. His 1,516z52 time in goal was tops among MIAC goalies in overall play, as was his 756 total saves. His time in goal was eighth-most among NCAA Division Ill players this season. In his Auggie career, Kent finished with a 3.68 GAA and .884 save percentage, with a 24—39-6 career record. Sauer finished second this season in scoring for the Auggies, with 15 goals and 17 assists for 32 points. He ranked seventh among MIAC players in overall points, while ranking fourth in goals and ninth in assists. ln league gamesonly, Sauer ranked fifth among MIAC players in total points (21), while ranking ninth in goals (9) and seventh in assists (12). In 47 career games at Augsburg, Sauer has 22 goals and 17 assists for 39 career points. Doden finished the season fifth on the team in total scoring, with 10 goals and 14 assists for 24 points, including two power-play goals. in MIAC overall statistics, Doden ranked 215t in total scoring, fifth among league newcomers, while ranking 23rd in goals and 24th in assists. Show moreThe Augsburg volleyball team, under fourth—year head coach Jessica Rinehart, finished the 2008 season with a record of 17-12 overall (5—6 MlAC), tying the most victories for an Augsburg volleyball team since 1998 (17-11 overall, 65 MIAC). With just two seniors on the roster, the Auggies finished in a tie for sixth place in the WAC standings with Carleton and St. Mary's, but lost out on a conference playoff berth due to tiebreaker criteria. Augsburg won nine of its final 13 matches, including a stretch of four straight conference victories in the fiveset limit. Among those wins was a dramatic home triumph over St. Olaf on Oct. 15, breaking a 31-match losing streak to the Oles dating to the 1989 season. Outside hitter/setter Julie Jenkins (SR, Edina, Minn.) was named to the All-MIAC volleyball squad, while middle blocker Amanda Rueb (SR, Plymouth, Minn/West Lutheran HS) earned All—MIAC Sportsmanship Team honors. Jenkins finished this season with a team-high 250 kills (2.29 kills per—set), to go along with 97 assists, 28 aces, 238 digs and 77 blocks. In her three years at Augsburg, Jenkins finished with 643 kills, 1,046 assists, 99 aces, 687 digs and 238 blocks — believed to be the only player in school history to finish with 600 kills, 600 digs and 1,000 assists in a career. Rueb finished this season with 109 kills (1.05 kps) and 60 blocks (0.58 bps), and her career with 184 kills (0.87 kps) and 121 blocks (24 solo, 0.57 bps). Also having outstanding individual seasons were outside hitter Katie Christensen (SO, North Mankato, Minn/Mankato West HS), who finished with 249 kills (2.44 kps), 127 digs (1.25 dps) and 50 blocks (7 solo, 0.49 bps); setter Shanna Reed (JR, Eagan, Minn/Holy Angels HS), who finished with 960 assists (8.73 aps), 214 digs (1.95 dps) and 30 blocks (3 solo, 0.27 bps), while moving into third place in career assists in school history (2,225); and libero Dani Tanaka (JR, Bloomington, Minn/Jefferson HS), who finished with a team—best 557 digs (5.02 dps), becoming the 11th player in school history to reach the 1,000-dig career plateau (1,026).
